French fries are vegan when they're just potatoes, vegetable oil and salt, but that isn't guaranteed. Some chains add beef flavouring, some chip shops fry in beef dripping, and many kitchens share the fryer with chicken or fish. Coated fries can also contain milk.

The country matters

McDonald's is the famous example: US fries contain natural beef flavour, while in the UK the fries are cooked in a dedicated vegetable-oil fryer and are listed as suitable for vegans. Other chains also change recipes and fryer setups by country. Check the allergen and ingredient guide on the chain's website for the country you're in. Frozen supermarket fries

Most frozen oven chips are potatoes, sunflower or rapeseed oil, and sometimes dextrose or rice flour for crispness. Those are vegan. Check seasoned or “crispy coated” varieties for milk powder, whey, cheese or butter flavour.

Shared fryers: decide your rule

A shared fryer doesn't put meat into the fries' recipe, but particles and fat do move between foods. Some vegans are fine with it; others only eat fries from a dedicated fryer. Neither is wrong. Our guide on cross-contact vs ingredients explains how to set a consistent standard.

Questions to ask at the counter

  1. What oil are the fries cooked in? Is any beef fat or lard used?
  2. Do the fries contain any flavouring or coating?
  3. Are they cooked in the same fryer as meat, fish or cheese?
  4. Are the dipping sauces egg- or dairy-based?
