Are Gummy Bears Vegan? Gelatin, Beeswax and Vegan Gummies
Classic gummy bears are not vegan because they're set with gelatin and often glazed with beeswax. Here's how to spot vegan gummies made with pectin or starch.

Classic gummy bears are not vegan. Their chewy, springy texture comes from gelatin, which is made from pig or cattle skin and bone. Many are also polished with beeswax and some are coloured with carmine. Vegan gummies do exist, set with pectin, starch or agar instead.
Animal ingredients common in gummies
| On the label | What it is |
|---|---|
| Gelatin / gelatine / E441 | Collagen from animal skin and bones; the main gelling agent |
| Beeswax / E901 | Glazing agent to stop sweets sticking together |
| Shellac / E904 / confectioner's glaze | Insect resin used for shine |
| Carmine / cochineal / E120 | Red dye from crushed insects |
| Natural flavours | Usually plant-based in sweets, but not guaranteed |
What vegan gummies use instead
- Pectin (E440): from fruit; gives a softer, cleaner bite. See pectin.
- Modified starch: often potato or corn; gives a chewier, denser texture.
- Agar (E406): seaweed-based, firmer and shorter texture (agar-agar).
- Carnauba wax (E903): plant wax from palm leaves, used instead of beeswax.
Vegan versions usually feel a bit less bouncy than gelatin bears. That's normal and doesn't mean anything's wrong with them.
Brand recipes vary by country
The same brand can use different recipes in different markets, and some make separate vegan ranges next to their standard gelatin bags. Haribo's classic Goldbears contain gelatin, but some of its other products don't. Check the pack in your hand, not a list you saw online years ago. Halal and kosher gummies often use beef or fish gelatin, so neither label means vegan.
A quick checklist
- Look for gelatin, E441, beeswax, E901, shellac, E904, carmine, E120.
- Look for a vegan logo or “suitable for vegans”. That's the fastest shortcut.
- “Vegetarian” gummies can still use beeswax or carmine, which most vegans avoid.
- Paste the ingredients into the ingredient checker if any name is unfamiliar.
