Is Coffee Creamer Vegan? Why “Non-Dairy” Creamer Often Isn't
Many 'non-dairy' coffee creamers contain sodium caseinate, a milk protein. Here's how to check creamer labels and which plant creamers are actually vegan.

Many coffee creamers are not vegan, even the ones labelled “non-dairy”. In the US, “non-dairy” can still be used for products containing sodium caseinate, a protein made from milk. Dairy creamers (half-and-half, cream) are obviously not vegan. Plant-based creamers made from oat, soy, almond or coconut usually are.
Why “non-dairy” isn't “dairy-free”
US labelling rules have historically allowed “non-dairy” on products that contain small amounts of milk derivatives like caseinate, provided the derivative is listed in the ingredients. That's why powdered creamers and some liquid flavoured creamers say “non-dairy” on the front and “contains milk” in the allergen statement. Always check the ingredients and allergen line, not the front of the pack.
Creamer ingredients to look for
| Ingredient | Vegan? |
|---|---|
| Sodium caseinate, calcium caseinate, casein | No (milk). See casein |
| Milk, cream, skim milk, milk protein concentrate | No |
| Whey | No |
| Mono- and diglycerides | Usually plant-derived here, but source-dependent |
| Dipotassium phosphate | Yes (mineral salt, stops curdling) |
| Sugar, corn syrup solids | Generally yes (sugar debated) |
| Natural flavours | Usually; can be dairy-derived. See natural flavors |
| Carrageenan, gellan gum | Yes |
Plant-based creamers
- Oat: creamy, neutral, steams well, least likely to split.
- Soy: richest protein, can curdle in very hot or acidic coffee. Pour coffee onto the creamer, not the other way round.
- Almond: thinner, nutty taste.
- Coconut: rich, distinct flavour.
Some “plant-based” branded creamers are blends that include a small amount of dairy, so check for milk in the allergen line even on these.
In coffee shops
Ask for oat, soy or almond milk by name rather than “non-dairy creamer”. Also check flavour syrups and sauces: caramel and white mocha sauces often contain dairy, and some “sweet cream” toppings are dairy. Our Starbucks page covers drinks that are easy to make vegan.

Frequently asked questions
- Is Coffee-mate vegan?
- Most of the classic Coffee-mate powders and liquids contain sodium caseinate, a milk derivative, so they're not vegan. Nestlé also sells plant-based lines.
- Is non-dairy creamer vegan?
- Not necessarily. Many contain sodium caseinate from milk.
- What is sodium caseinate?
- A protein extracted from cow's milk, used to whiten and thicken.
- Is oat creamer vegan?
- Usually yes, but check for added milk in blended products.
- Why does plant creamer curdle?
- Heat and acidity make plant proteins clump. Let coffee cool slightly or use a barista-style creamer with a stabiliser.
