Is Chewing Gum Vegan? Gum Base, Gelatin and Glycerin
Some chewing gum contains gelatin, beeswax, carmine or animal-derived glycerin and stearic acid, and the gum base itself is rarely disclosed. Here's how to judge a pack.

Some chewing gum is vegan and some isn't, and it's often hard to tell from the label. The obvious animal ingredients are gelatin, beeswax, shellac and carmine. The harder ones are glycerin, stearic acid and the “gum base” itself, which manufacturers rarely break down.
Ingredients to check in gum
| Ingredient | Concern |
|---|---|
| Gelatin | Used in some coated pellet gums. Not vegan |
| Gum base | A proprietary mix of polymers, resins, waxes and softeners. May include lanolin or animal-derived softeners |
| Glycerin | Keeps gum soft; can be plant or animal fat |
| Stearic acid | Softener; plant or animal |
| Beeswax, shellac, carnauba wax | Coatings; beeswax and shellac aren't vegan, carnauba is |
| Carmine / E120 | Red/pink colouring from insects |
| Casein phosphopeptide (CPP-ACP / Recaldent) | Milk-derived; found in some “tooth-friendly” gums |
The gum base problem
Modern gum base is mostly synthetic (polyvinyl acetate, polyisobutylene) or natural tree latex like chicle. Lanolin and animal-derived glycerides have historically been used as softeners, and because gum base is often treated as a trade secret, you may only see “gum base” on the label. If the brand states the product is vegan or the gum base is plant/synthetic, that settles it. If not, you'll need to ask or decide how strict you want to be.
How to find a vegan gum
- Look for a vegan logo or a clear statement on the brand's website.
- Avoid gelatin, beeswax, shellac, carmine and anything milk-derived.
- Natural chicle gums often state their full ingredients and are commonly vegan.
- If glycerin and stearic acid aren't stated as vegetable, email the manufacturer. Most will answer.
Recipes vary between countries, so a gum that's vegan in one market may not be in another. For background on source-dependent ingredients, read confusing ingredients.
