Is Vaseline Vegan? Petroleum Jelly, Variants and Animal Testing
Pure petroleum jelly contains no animal ingredients, but some Vaseline variants add lanolin, beeswax or cocoa butter blends, and cruelty-free status is a separate question. Here's how to check.

Pure petroleum jelly, including original Vaseline, contains no animal ingredients. It's a mixture of mineral oil and waxes from petroleum refining. That makes it vegan by ingredients. Whether you're happy buying it is a different question: some Vaseline variants contain animal-derived ingredients, and animal-testing policies are separate from what's in the tub.
Ingredients vs animal testing
“Vegan” and “cruelty-free” describe different things. Vegan means no animal-derived ingredients; cruelty-free means no animal testing. A product can be one without the other. Brands owned by large companies that sell in markets where animal testing has been required have historically not been considered cruelty-free by certifiers. Check a current certifier list, such as Leaping Bunny, if testing matters to you. Read vegan vs cruelty-free for the full difference.
Variants to check
| Product type | Possible animal ingredients |
|---|---|
| Original petroleum jelly | None |
| Lip therapy tins and balms | Beeswax, lanolin in some flavours |
| Body lotions | Glycerin, stearic acid (source-dependent), lanolin, collagen |
| Tinted lip products | Carmine (CI 75470) |
| Generic store-brand petroleum jelly | Usually none |
Reading cosmetic labels
Cosmetics use INCI names, so ingredients look different from food labels: lanolin may appear as lanolin or lanolin alcohol, beeswax as cera alba, carmine as CI 75470, and honey as mel. Glycerin and stearic acid can be plant or animal; brands that are fully vegan usually say so. See our vegan cosmetics guide for a longer list.
Plant-based alternatives
If you'd rather avoid petroleum or want a certified vegan option, look for balms made from plant waxes (candelilla, carnauba), shea butter and plant oils. These behave a little differently: they're less occlusive than petroleum jelly, but work well for lips and dry patches.
