Is Vinegar Vegan? Balsamic, Malt, Wine and Fining
Almost all vinegar is vegan. Watch for honey vinegar, wine vinegars that may be fined with animal products, and flavoured balsamic glazes. Here's how to check.

Almost all vinegar is vegan. Vinegar is made by bacteria converting alcohol into acetic acid, and the starting alcohol comes from grain, grapes, apples, rice or sugar cane. The exceptions are honey vinegar, some wine vinegars made from wine fined with animal products, and flavoured glazes or dressings with added ingredients.
Vinegar types
| Type | Vegan? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Distilled white vinegar | Yes | Grain or corn alcohol |
| Apple cider vinegar | Yes | The “mother” is bacteria and cellulose, not animal |
| Malt vinegar | Yes | From malted barley |
| Rice vinegar | Yes | Seasoned sushi vinegar adds sugar and salt; occasionally bonito in some Japanese seasonings |
| Red and white wine vinegar | Usually | Wine may have been fined with gelatin, casein, egg white or isinglass |
| Balsamic vinegar | Usually | Traditional balsamic is cooked grape must; cheaper balsamic includes wine vinegar |
| Balsamic glaze | Check | Thickeners and sugar are usually fine; some contain honey |
| Honey vinegar / mead vinegar | No | Made from honey |
The wine fining issue
Wine is often clarified with fining agents such as gelatin, casein, egg albumen or isinglass. They're filtered out but are used in processing, which is why many vegans check wine (see is wine vegan). Wine vinegar inherits that question. In practice, vinegar makers rarely state whether the base wine was fined, and many vegans don't treat wine vinegar as a problem. If it matters to you, look for a vegan label or ask the producer.
The vinegar “mother”
The cloudy strands in raw apple cider vinegar are a colony of acetic acid bacteria in a cellulose matrix. It's not an animal product.
Dressings and condiments made with vinegar
Vinegar is vegan, but products that contain it often aren't: Caesar dressing, honey mustard, mayonnaise, Worcestershire and some ketchups with honey. Check the full label rather than the vinegar alone.
