Standard Skittles in the US and UK currently contain no animal-derived ingredients, so most vegans consider them vegan. Older recipes used gelatin and some versions used carmine, both since removed from the main lines. Limited editions, sour and “gummy” Skittles, and other countries' recipes can differ, so check the pack.

What's in Skittles

The core recipe is sugar, corn syrup, hydrogenated palm kernel oil, fruit juice concentrate, citric acid, modified corn starch, flavourings, colours and carnauba wax. The UK recipe uses mostly natural-origin colours like spirulina, paprika and carrot; the US uses synthetic dyes like Red 40.

IngredientVegan concern?
SugarPossible bone char in US cane sugar; most vegans accept it (details)
Carnauba waxNo. It's a palm-leaf wax
Synthetic dyes (Red 40, Yellow 5…)No animal source, but historically animal-tested; some vegans avoid them
Natural flavoursUsually fruit-type flavourings; not disclosed in detail
GelatinNot in current standard Skittles; check gummies and special editions
Carmine / E120Not in current standard US/UK recipes

Variants worth checking

  • Skittles Gummies: a separate product; check for gelatin.
  • Sours: generally the same base, but check the coating ingredients.
  • Limited editions and imports: recipes vary, and some markets have used shellac or carmine in colourful candy.

The food dye debate

Artificial colours aren't made from animals, but they have been tested on animals for regulatory approval. Most vegans focus on ingredients rather than historical safety testing, but some avoid synthetic dyes for that reason. It's a personal line; see vegan vs cruelty-free for how the two ideas differ.
